This course prepares pupils to progress to the next level of vocational learning and prepare you for the specific job roles of a hairdressing or beauty therapy. All the units in this qualification directly prepare you for further study in the hair and beauty sector and relate directly to the job role.

The course aims to:

  • develop a broad and comprehensive understanding of the hair and beauty sector
  • develop knowledge which spans the entire vocational sector and related industries
  • develop academic study and transferable skills that will support progression within the hair and beauty sector and more broadly

KS4 pupils will undertake the following units across the two year course.

Unit 1- Understanding the Hair and Beauty Industry

Unit 2- hair and Beauty Research Project

Unit 3- Hair and Beauty Science

Unit 4- Responding to a Hair and Beauty Design Brief.

At the start of year 10, pupils will be given the option to take Hair and Beauty. This will only be offered to students who are considering the industry post-16. Over the course of the weeks lessons students will have 3 classroom lessons where they will work towards developing their coursework and knowledge for assessments. Alongside this, one lesson per week will consist of targeted practical lessons. This will include: Customer service expectations, sectioning and blow drying, straightening, curling, setting and eventually building to colouring hair.

The course is assessed with one external examination and 3 pieces of externally set, internally marked coursework. Coursework briefs will be given at the start of the course for students to work towards as they develop their knowledge of the industry.

Pupil’s progress is evaluated using their baseline upon entry to the academy and the progress they are making.  This allows necessary intervention to be put in place in order to give pupils the best chance of obtaining their expected outcomes. Alongside the academic qualification students will have practical sessions to develop customer service skills and understand basic hairdressing strategies.
